Starting anxiety treatment can feel uncertain, particularly if you have never worked with a therapist or psychiatric clinician. Knowing what typically happens can make the process more approachable and help you prepare for a productive first appointment.
Helyx Health provides personalized anxiety treatment for adults in Beverly Hills and surrounding Los Angeles communities.
An initial appointment is primarily an assessment. Your clinician will ask what brought you to treatment, when the symptoms began, how often they occur, and how they affect daily functioning. You may discuss worry, panic, avoidance, physical symptoms, sleep, mood, relationships, work, health history, medications, substance use, and previous treatment.
You do not need to organize your experience perfectly before the appointment. The clinician will help identify the most relevant information and clarify what you would like to change.
Treatment goals should be specific to your life. One patient may want to speak more comfortably in meetings, while another may want to reduce panic-related avoidance, sleep more consistently, travel again, or make decisions without repeatedly seeking reassurance.
Goals can change as treatment progresses. They provide direction without requiring the patient to know every step in advance.
Depending on the symptoms and therapist, treatment may incorporate cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, exposure-based strategies, mindfulness, psychodynamic therapy, relational work, or trauma-focused methods.
Some sessions may focus on understanding patterns and past experiences. Others may involve practicing a skill, planning a gradual approach to an avoided situation, or reviewing what happened between appointments.
A psychiatric evaluation may be recommended when symptoms are severe, persistent, or insufficiently improved through therapy alone. Medication decisions consider the patient’s health history, other medications, previous response, side effects, preferences, and treatment goals.
Therapy and medication can be used separately or together. Neither option is automatically required.
Progress may be reflected in lower symptom intensity, less avoidance, improved functioning, or a greater ability to tolerate uncertainty and distress. Your clinician may use clinical discussion, goal review, and standardized questionnaires to evaluate whether treatment remains useful.
