Mood conditions, which include depression, bipolar disorder, and other types of mental illness, affect the way a person feels and has an impact on their overall mood and emotional disposition. Mood problems are very common, affecting millions of people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. They can be difficult to diagnose and treat, but with the right support system and treatment plan, they can also be effectively managed, often with a combination of therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes.
Mood conditions are a group of illnesses that cause a person to feel a wide range of emotions, from extreme sadness to extreme happiness, which is far more intense than what most people feel. They include depression, which causes a person to feel extremely sad for long periods, and bipolar disorder, which causes a person to experience intense highs with an abundance of energy, and extreme lows, with feelings of sadness and depression.
Common mood disorders include:
• Bipolar Disorder – Bipolar disorder, also called manic depression, is characterized by alternating episodes of both mania—high, positive, and elated mood—and depression—low, negative, and lethargic mood. Bipolar disorder has 4 types: Bipolar I, where manic episodes last a week or more and there may or may not be depressive symptoms; Bipolar II, where manic and depression symptoms are both present but mania symptoms are often much less pronounced; Cyclothymic disorder (cyclothymia), which is essentially a milder form of bipolar disorder and is characterized by highs and lows that are unconnected to daily life; and Type IV, which is a category reserved for people with atypical symptoms that do not fall into any other type.
• Major Depressive Disorder – Often abbreviated as MDD, major depressive disorder is characterized by low mood for a prolonged period, intense sadness, or a sense of dread. MDD is more than just being in a bad mood or experiencing temporary despair; symptoms can last for weeks, but often last for longer—months, or even years.
• Dysthymia – Also called persistent depressive disorder (PDD), a prolonged period of moderate depression is an indication of dysthymia, at least 1 year for adolescents and at least 2 years for adults.
• Mood fluctuations
• Bouts of depression
• Impatience
• Restlessness
• Unusual sleep habits
• Loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed
In severe cases, people may experience:
• Suicidal thoughts
• Hallucinations
• Delusions
Mood conditions can be treated in a variety of different ways, from medications to counseling. One of the most popular forms of treatment for mood problems is psychotherapy, sometimes known as talk therapy; this may include: cognitive behavioral therapy; interpersonal therapy; problem-solving therapy; and brain stimulation therapies.
Mood stabilizing aid in controlling the mood fluctuations associated with mental health conditions including depression and bipolar disorder. They reduce abnormal brain activity.
